On Monday afternoon, deputies from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office were conducting a threat investigation in Leonardtown, and while interviewing Gross, determined that he had an open warrant out for his arrest for driving while suspended, leading to a violent situation that rapidly escalated.

When Deputies Alexander Wynnyk and Richard Wilhelmi attempted to arrest Gross, the Leonardtown resident began backing away and resisted, officials say, prompting a physical altercation that left one deputy injured.

According to a spokesperson from the sheriff's office, Gross caused the deputies to fall into a chain link fence, which was damaged, and Wynnyk was punched repeatedly in the head during the struggle, sending him to the hospital once Gross was detained.

Gross was charged with:

  • Felony assault of a law enforcement officer;
  • Second-degree assault;
  • Resisting or interfering with an arrest;
  • Failure to obey a lawful order;
  • Malicious destruction of property under $1,000.

Wynnyk was treated for abrasions and a concussion, though he has since been released from MedStar St. Mary's Hospital.
